Mr Denis Wong (Lecturer, EdUHK), Ms Cathy Chia, and Mr Ans Naseer (English Teachers, Ho Ming Primary School) presented an AI teaching and learning research project conducted with P3 students to explore how AI tools can enhance self-directed learning (SDL). The project involved 50 students using AI tools across three key areas: 1. planning (using chatbots to provide personalised suggestions based on exam results); 2. monitoring (using AI-generated reading passages and writing feedback); and 3. evaluating (using chatbots to identify strengths and weaknesses in learning outcomes). Pre- and post-survey results showed significant improvements in students' ability to set English learning goals independently and locate useful learning resources.
However, the group also highlighted findings important to teachers integrating AI into their teaching. Students noted that AI cannot understand emotions or provide genuine care like teachers, reinforcing the irreplaceable value of human support in learning. Mr Ans Naseer also pointed out some challenges, including technical issues with logging into over 50 school devices and account sharing limitations that caused platform crashes. The key takeaways from the project included rethinking the device-to-student ratio (e.g., one device per group rather than 1:1), staggering AI tasks to avoid peak internet traffic, and using login-free bot channels. In the end, the group emphasised that AI should serve as a learning partner, not a replacement for teachers – and that proper planning and technical support are essential for successful AI integration.
