SDL in Primary English: How Can AI Help?

Mr Keric Lee (Vice Principal) and Ms Summer Chan (Curriculum Leader), from S.K.H. Yuen Chen Maun Chen Jubilee Primary School, used their breakout seminar during the 8th Annual Roundtable to share how their school is using AI to enhance self-directed learning (SDL). Their presentation was structured around the three stages of a lesson: the pre-lesson (when students act as "learning detectives" using AI for research and question generation); the while-lesson (when AI serves as a personal tutor to provide writing and multimedia support), and the post-lesson (when students create AI-powered tools such as interview bots and educational games).


Mr Lee also introduced five key principles for teachers to consider when designing AI-enhanced lessons: 1. student agency (students make key decisions); 2. variation (AI creates diversity, not uniformity); 3. authenticity (thinking processes must be visible); 4. empathy (creations should express student perspectives), and 5. boundaries (teachers must define what cannot be outsourced to AI). He concluded that the goal is not to replace teachers, but to empower students with the skills to use AI independently for lifelong learning.
